CISCO SMI / EMI
The SMI is essentially a Layer 2 (L2) only image. In software version 121-11.EA1, basic Layer 3 (L3) functionality was added to the SMI to include static unicast routing and the Routing Information Protocol (RIP). To use advanced routing features and other routing protocols, you must have the EMI installed on your switch. The EMI is an L2 image combined with a full L3 feature set, including Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP) and Enhanced IGRP (EIGRP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) version 4, Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), Protocol-Independent Multicast (PIM) and other advanced services.
